Select Committee on Dying with Dignity Tables its Report
Thursday, March 22, 2012
On Thursday, March 22, 2012, after two years of work, the Chair and Vice-chair of the Select Committee on Dying with Dignity, Maryse Gaudreault and Véronique Hivon, tabled a report containing 24 unanimous recommendations in the National Assembly.
The Select Committee on Dying with Dignity was created on December 4, 2009, to hold a general consultation on end-of-life issues, palliative care and euthanasia.
About the Report
In addition to essential definitions and legal concepts, this report includes two main sections. The first covers end-of-life care and discusses refusal and termination of treatment, palliative care, palliative sedation and the planning of end-of-life care in case of incapacity.
The second section presents the fruit of the Committee's reflections on euthanasia. Specifically, it describes the context, presents the arguments for and against the practice and explains the Committee's position to allow under exceptional, well-defined circumstances the possibility for a capable adult, whose suffering due to an incurable disease cannot be alleviated, to request medical assistance to die. It also sets out what criteria should be prescribed by law to ensure that medically assisted dying is only allowed in the cases expressly provided for.
A paper copy of the report is available on request. The report can also be consulted online in the Related documents section.
