Petition:
Funding and services for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders
Petition text
WHEREAS Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) children no longer qualify for Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) treatment after they turn 5;
WHEREAS many parents with ASD children pay out of pocket for treatment, which adds financial strain to the challenges faced by families;
WHEREAS delayed or denied treatment increases the isolation and dependency which autistic children will experience later in life;
WHEREAS upon diagnosis, direct funding should be provided to parents so they can seek specialized therapy for their children (ABA, speech, occupational, etc.);
WHEREAS integration aides require training in ABA by qualified, certified behavior analysts, and regular support to monitor progress and challenges; schools also require additional aides because one aide is often shared among many kids;
We, the undersigned, request that the Government of Québec increase access to psychiatrists to allow diagnosis within four months, provide direct funding for private care, recruit additional integration aides to support classroom teachers, and train new and existing integration aides in ABA.
