Petition:
Introduction of various vegan options in public cafeterias
Petition text
WHEREAS there are few, if any, plant-based menu options in Québec's public cafeterias;
WHEREAS the absence of vegan options is a major obstacle to implementing the new Canada Food Guide, which recommends eating more vegetables, whole grains, fruit and nuts, and less meat and cheese;
WHEREAS the absence of vegan options infringes on the rights of vegans by forcing them to consume animal products against their conscience, which violates section 2A of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, which recognizes citizens' fundamental right to freedom of conscience;
WHEREAS our food choices have a major impact on public health and the environment (greenhouse gases, pollution, and water waste, resistance to antibiotics, zoonotic diseases, chronic non-contagious diseases, etc.) and the Government is responsible for protecting the future of generations to come;
WHEREAS most Quebecers would like to reduce their consumption of animal products and increase their intake of plant-based foods but find it challenging to do so in many circumstances;
We, the undersigned, ask the Government of Québec to introduce a law that requires a variety of vegan options in public cafeterias (schools, hospitals, prisons, Government buildings, etc.).
