The National Assembly of Québec is composed of 125 members elected by the population in each electoral division under the single member constituency plurality system. The National Assembly and the Lieutenant-Governor form the Parliament of Québec.

In Québec's British-style parliamentary system, the Parliament and the Government represent two distinct levels of power : legislative power and executive power.

The Premier and the ministers, who together with the Lieutenant-Governor form the Government, exercise executive power. Legislative power resides in the Parliament. In addition to a legislative role, Members are responsible for overseeing the actions of the Government and government departments and bodies, and serve as mediators between electors of their constituency and the public administration.

Members perform their work in particular in the Assembly and in parliamentary committee. To ensure the proper conduct of proceedings, the enforcement of the Standing Orders and of the Rules for the Conduct of Proceedings in the National Assembly and the assignment of specific responsibilities to some of the Members are among the measures taken.

Four persons are appointed by the National Assembly and are accountable thereto. This status contributes to maintaining their independence in the exercise of their duties : as Chief Electoral Officer, as Public Protector, as Auditor General and as Lobbyists Commissioner.

The President oversees and directs the National Assembly's administrative services, supported by the Office of the Assembly which establishes the administrative rules governing the Assembly. The Office is composed of the President, five Members from the government party and four Members from the Official Opposition. The Secretary General is the secretary of the Office.

For over one hundred years, the National Assembly has been sitting in the magnificent Parliament Building, which is situated in the heart of the city of Québec. The architecture and decoration of this remarkable building are an eloquent testimonial to Québec's history.
