The National Assembly is composed of 125 Members. As of November 10, 2009, its composition is as follows:

Québec Liberal Party 66
Parti québécois 51
Action démocratique du Québec 4
Québec solidaire 1
Independants 3

The members are each elected in a riding under the single-member constituency plurality system. The Constitution provides that a general election must be held in Québec at the latest every five years.

The last general election was held on December 8, 2008. The Québec Liberal Party, and its leader Jean Charest, obtained 66 seats and forms the Government. The Parti québécois, and its leader Pauline Marois, forms the Official Opposition with 51 Members. The Action démocratique du Québec, led by Mario Dumont, obtained 7 seats and Québec solidaire obtained one seat. Thirty-seven MNAs were women.
