Government assessment and action plan with regard to cancer prevention

CONSIDERING THAT cancer is a scourge that increasingly threatens Québec citizens;

CONSIDERING THAT our lifestyle amplifies the risk of developing this type of disease;

CONSIDERING THAT in the last ten years, the number of new cancer cases in Québec has increased by 2% per year, on average;

CONSIDERING THAT it is anticipated that the number of new cancer cases will increase by at least 35% in Québec over the next 15 years;

CONSIDERING THAT since 2000, cancer has been the leading cause of death in Québec, ahead of cardiovascular diseases;

CONSIDERING THAT about one in two Quebecers will have to fight cancer during their lifetime, and one in four will die from it;

CONSIDERING THAT prevention is an essential function of public health, because it makes it possible to act favorably on the determinants of health;

We, the undersigned, ask the National Assembly to mandate the Committee on Health and Social Services to assess past and current government actions related to cancer prevention in order to develop a bold action plan to fight this pandemic issue;

That the Committee define a coherent national interdepartmental strategy to fight against cancer in order to make Québec the most progressive nation in North America in terms of cancer prevention;

That for this purpose, it convene the Ministries of Health and Social Services, Education, Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Environment and, if necessary, any other ministry.
