Petition:
Inclusion of continuous glucose monitoring systems on the list of medical accessories reimbursed by the RAMQ

Petition text

CONSIDERING THAT type 1 diabetes is a chronic autoimmune disease that can lead to short-term complications (ketoacidosis, injury to self or others, seizures, coma, death) and long-term complications (heart, blood vessel, nerve, kidney and eye damage, bone fractures) in the absence of tight glycemic control and glycated hemoglobin levels;

CONSIDERING THAT early-onset type 1 diabetes can have profound and permanent adverse outcomes on children’s health and that, due to the vulnerability of their developing brain, severe hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia episodes can cause neurocognitive damage;

CONSIDERING THAT low income families suffer from disparate access to health services and care for children, negatively affecting their glycemic and glycated hemoglobin levels;

CONSIDERING THAT the use of a continuous glucose monitoring system is the only tool that contributes to improving, lifestyle and glycemic control, reducing glycated hemoglobin levels, preventing and reducing the risks of severe hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia;

CONSIDERING THAT in cases where persons do not have the capacity to care for themselves (labile diabetes, symptom unawareness, mental illnesses), the only tool which prevents short-term complications is the continuous glucose monitoring system;

We, the undersigned, ask the Québec Government to include continuous glucose monitoring systems approved by Health Canada as medical accessories reimbursed by the RAMQ, and to commit to putting forth similar measures to financially support patients suffering from type 1 diabetes.
