Postponement of the reopening date of the Lac des Pins Campground for health reasons related to the COVID-19 pandemic

WHEREAS the MRC du Haut-Saint-Laurent has seen minimal impact from the COVID-19 pandemic;

WHEREAS, in the summer, tourists from Montreal come to the MRC to enjoy camping at the Lac des Pins Campground;

WHEREAS Montreal is the epicentre of the pandemic in Canada;

WHEREAS Lac des Pins Campground is the second-largest campground in the province and sees up to 8,000 people in a single summer weekend, and the MRC is not equipped to handle the influx on its health care system and essential services;

WHEREAS one quarter of the population of the MRC is considered to be at "high risk" of contracting the virus;

WHEREAS, even with a 75 % reduction in the capacity of the campground, its density per hectare would be greater than that of the City of Montreal;

WHEREAS the economy of the MRC depends on agriculture, and an epidemic in the riding of Huntingdon would be devastating for agriculture throughout the province;

WHEREAS large gatherings are forbidden until August 31, 2020, to limit the spread of COVID-19;

We, the undersigned, ask the Government of Québec to deem the Lac des Pins Campground as similar to a large gathering, and to delay the reopening of the Lac des Pins Campground to August 31, 2020.
