Petition:
Request to provide Quebec correctional services officers with protective vests
Petition text
WHEREAS staff shortages in provincial correctional facilities are increasing tensions between officers and inmates, making supervision more dangerous and less secure;
WHEREAS the closure of certain facility sectors has led to growing dissatisfaction among inmates, further escalating tensions and the risk of violence;
WHEREAS the use of drones for deliveries has risen significantly in recent years, resulting in the discovery of ceramic knives, saw blades and other tools that can be used as weapons, endangering the safety of officers;
WHEREAS numerous improvised weapons have been found in the possession of inmates, which are manufactured within the facilities, increasing the risk of assault;
WHEREAS there has been a significant rise in physical assaults against correctional officers and a general decline in safety within these facilities;
WHEREAS the growing prevalence of mental health issues among inmates has made their behaviour increasingly unpredictable, further endangering officers;
WHEREAS federal detention centres, which house a comparable population, as well as security agencies, have already implemented protective measures, including the provision of protective vests;
We, the undersigned, ask the Government of Québec to provide Quebec correctional service agents with protective vests to ensure their physical safety while carrying out their duties.
