Creation and Funding of an Interpreting Services Program for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Community

WHEREAS deaf and hearing-impaired individuals often serve in positions of leadership requiring them to attend multiple meetings;

WHEREAS interpreters are paid for by the user since non-profit organizations are unable to offer the service themselves; the cost per user is often more than $1,000 per use;

WHEREAS the user must take on the burden and bear the cost of hiring an interpreter;

WHEREAS this creates discrimination and barriers to participation in local democracy;

WHEREAS a new funding program would allow the beneficiariy to have increased access to a wide variety of services, which would permit them to expand their participation in Quebec society beyond their medical or professional needs;

We, the undersigned, ask the Government of Québec to urgently intervene by creating and funding a program to fund interpreter services for the deaf and hard of hearing community.
