Opposition to the sale of the heritage building and the permanent relocation of FACE public school to Montréal

WHEREAS, for 50 years, the FACE School educational project has provided an arts-based primary and secondary education to students in both the French and English school boards;

WHEREAS this project, unique in North America, has produced graduates who have gone on to become highly respected artists within the Québec community and beyond;

WHEREAS the building that has housed this school since 1975 is a Beaux-Arts building constructed in 1914 that, today, has great patrimonial value;

WHEREAS the school’s central location, in the heart of the city and close to a métro station, provides access to families from various socio-cultural backgrounds;

WHEREAS the building is in a state of serious disrepair;

WHEREAS parents and teachers have been working together for many years to plan the temporary relocation of the school, and that firm commitments have been made to ensure students will return to the current building once work is completed;

We, the undersigned, ask the Government of Québec to:

• reverse its decision to permanently relocate FACE School and sell its patrimonial building to private interests;
• develop, together with the community, a new plan to safeguard FACE’s educational project, the envy of our public school system.
