Petition:
Accessibility and funding of paratransit to ensure that public transportation remains equitable
Petition text
WHEREAS people with disabilities have a right to equitable public transportation;
WHEREAS people with disabilities are often excluded from conventional public transportation due to decisions that render it inaccessible (for example, no elevators to access metro platforms or bus operators who do not know how to use the ramps on the bus);
WHEREAS people with disabilities are often excluded from conventional public transportation due to slow retrofitting to render it accessible due to inadequate funding;
WHEREAS people with disabilities need equitable public transportation to get to work, school, shopping, leisure activities and medical appointments;
WHEREAS funding for public transportation, including paratransit, is inadequate;
WHEREAS paratransit is in danger of being privitised, with more and more services being moved to private contractors, outside the Société de transport de Montréal (STM);
WHEREAS the reason given for the privitisation is a lack of government funding;
We, the undersigned, ask the Gouvernement du Québec:
- to fund public transportation, such as the STM, including and especially paratransit;
- to ensure that paratransit remain public, accessible and of high quality, and be managed by public transit authorities;
- to present and share the findings of their report—as promised, but not yet delivered—on paratransit.
