Petition text
WHEREAS access to menstrual products is an essential need and a fundamental right for people who menstruate;
WHEREAS menstrual products are basic necessities, just like toilet paper and soap, since menstruation is a natural bodily function;
WHEREAS nearly one in seven girls in Quebec has missed school due to a lack of access to menstrual products, according to the Quebec Network for Women's Health;
WHEREAS one in five Québec women reports having used alternative (and often harmful) methods to absorb menstrual blood due to the cost of menstrual products;
WHEREAS nearly one in two Québec women reports having missed an activity due to her period or out of fear of not having access to menstrual products or adequate sanitary facilities (Nanos poll, 2019);
WHEREAS access to menstrual products in schools is a matter of hygiene and public health, but also of dignity, access to education, and gender equality and equal opportunities;
WHEREAS British Columbia, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Ontario, Manitoba, and Newfoundland and Labrador provide free menstrual products in schools within their borders;
We, the undersigned, ask the Government of Québec to:
- make menstrual products, such as tampons and sanitary pads, available free of charge in Québec’s elementary and secondary schools;
- subsidize the purchase of reusable menstrual products for students attending these schools.
