Petition:
Physical education and health of our youth
Petition text
CONSIDERING THAT over the past several years youth medical checkups have revealed alarming results and the high cost of our health care system is directly linked to the physical inactivity of our citizens;
CONSIDERING THAT the Education Program in Quebec schools aims to educate students and that the acquisition of healthy lifestyle habits should occupy a major part of the program;
CONSIDERING THAT we should further favor the value of educational success rather than limit ourselves to academic success;
CONSIDERING THAT physical education allows our youth to discover and develop new physical, intellectual, social and emotional skills which will have a major impact on the habits of their physical activity, their health and their well-being;
CONSIDERING THAT by increasing the amount of time allotted for physical education and health in all schools constitutes the most democratic approach because it offers an equal opportunity to all, children or youth, skillful or less skillful, affluent or not, to receive the same learning experience in physical education and health;
CONSIDERING THAT not much time is allotted to the physical education of our youth in comparison to those of other nations of the world;
We, the undersigned, ask the Ministère de l'Éducation, du Loisir et du Sport to modify, as of next year, the Basic School Regulation presently in effect in Québec schools in order to guarantee a compulsory weekly minimum of 120 minutes of physical education and health for students in preschool and elementary school and a minimum of 150
minutes for students in high school.
