WHEREAS early intervention has a hugely positive impact on the quality of life of children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). But late diagnosis and lengthy waiting lists for professional treatment in Quebec are denying these children the care they need; WHEREAS more than 40% of parents with ASD children pay for treatment because the public system cannot respond to demand; WHEREAS the cost of delayed treatment is enormous for society. Quebec must invest more in saving these children from lives of isolation and dependency; WHEREAS within the network of institutions that help ASD families, there are further inequities. CROM (Centre de réadaptation de l’Ouest de Montréal) is cost-effective in comparison with other similar centres in Montreal; WHEREAS a recent Auditor General's report and other independent studies have documented that CROM is chronically underfunded. In comparison to other treatment centers in the city, CROM receives $13.6 million less in annual funding; WHEREAS CROM needs an increase of at least $12.2 million to address its waiting list that has over 500 people, mostly children with ASD who are desperately waiting for treatment; We, the undersigned, request that the Government of Quebec provides more support for families struggling with ASD and to ensure CROM receives an additional $12.2 million in funding enabling them to provide efficient treatment to the children with ASD who urgently need it.
