Petition:
Support offered to young people leaving foster care at the age of 18
Petition text
WHEREAS the Montreal Lakeshore University Women’s Club (MLUWC) is a non-profit organization with the mandate to improve the quality of life of women and to promote human rights;
WHEREAS, despite no longer living in foster care, the more than 1,200 youth who leave foster care each year after turning 18 still need support;
WHEREAS youth who are no longer in care are more vulnerable to long-term detrimental consequences, such as dropping out of school, mental health issues, exploitation, unwanted pregnancy, drug and alcohol impairment, incarceration and homelessness;
WHEREAS 20% of former Youth Protection clients are homeless;
We, the undersigned, ask the Government of Québec to:
-
Offer financial support to youth in transition, until they turn 21;
-
Ensure that this clientele receives regular and continuous follow-up care from a professional, until they turn 25;
-
Develop a financial program which would allow youth who are in transition and who are enrolled in a post-secondary education program to support themselves;
-
Provide stable funding to non-profit organizations such as CARE Jeunesse in order to implement strategies to prevent youth homelessness and to support vulnerable youth;
-
Consult former foster care clients to obtain their input on the development of such policy.
