Closure of stores on Sundays

CONSIDERING THAT Sunday store closures afford citizens time for more rest, to dedicate to personal growth, and to reconnect with nature;

CONSIDERING the physical, psychological, family-wide, community-wide, environmental and social benefits of one day of rest per week;

CONSIDERING THAT a very large proportion of Quebecers welcomed the closing of stores on Sundays during the months of April and May 2020, closure that was carried out smoothly and without difficulty;

CONSIDERING THAT the federal Lord’s Day Act was nullified by the Supreme Court on April 24, 1985;

CONSIDERING THAT globally numerous states and countries with modern, innovative and thriving economies have opted to close commercial businesses one day a week;

We, the undersigned, ask the National Assembly to permanently reinstate the closure of commercial businesses on Sundays, with the exception of essential services, by means of an amendment to the Act respecting hours and days of admission to commercial establishments, passed in 1990 and amended several times since.
