Opposition to Bill 61

WHEREAS the situation caused by Covid-19 is exceptional, constantly evolving and that the Québec population has followed the instructions of Public Health since the start of the pandemic;

WHEREAS the indefinite extension of the state of health emergency would give the Government of Québec exceptional power without the need for accountability and would continue to create inequities;

WHEREAS economic recovery should not come at the expense of the integrity of the principles of the rule of law;

WHEREAS Bill 61 would give the Government of Québec expanded power in the areas of expropriation and environment without the appropriate questioning;

WHEREAS Bill 61 would bring to the fore all indicators of corruption while introducing disproportionate judicial immunity;

We, the undersigned, ask the Government of Québec :

• To thoroughly review the text of Bill 61;
• To respect our freedoms and our fundamental rights;
• To commit keeping the foundations of our democracy intact, by allowing the opposition and the population to demand accountability from members of the government.
