Protective measures implemented in schools in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic

WHEREAS  the level of community transmission of the SARS-CoV-2 virus remains high;

WHEREAS the protective measures in place in schools are insufficient and the appearance of the highly contagious SARS-CoV-2 virus (B117) may lead to more serious consequences among youth;

We, the undersigned, ask the Government of Québec to put in place the following measures to ensure the protection of students and staff in schools: 

• Maintain schooling at a distance for all until the contamination rate has returned to below 25 new cases/100,000 people per day;
• Provide the opportunity to continue remote schooling at all times for all students whose parents request it;
• If the rate of contamination is again below 25/100,000, open schools gradually with the addition of appropriate measures;
• Make schools safe by providing CO2 detectors and HEPA air purifiers in every classroom and prohibit teaching in classrooms without windows;
• Maintain a distance of two metres at all times;
• If necessary, use additional rooms to allow distance and ventilation;
• Conduct weekly rapid saliva tests of students and school staff;
• Ensure access to personal protective equipment for students and school staff;
• Make the wearing of masks mandatory for all, starting in preschool;
• Prioritize school staff for immunization after health professionals.
