Recognition of the Official Quebec Tartan

WHEREAS the first Scottish immigrants settled in Quebec over 400 years ago, and the Scottish community in Quebec has contributed significantly to the economic, social and cultural development of the province;

WHEREAS several tens of thousands of Quebecers are of Scottish origin;

WHEREAS the Plaid du Quebec tartan was designed to represent the provincial coat of arms: the blue is for the field of the upper division containing three fleur de lys, the green is for the sprig of maple leaves on the lower division, the gold is for the lion passant  in the middle division and also for the crown of the crest, and the white is for the scroll with the motto “Je me souviens” (I remember);

WHEREAS the Plaid du Quebec tartan is numbered 1949 in the Scottish Register of Tartans;

WHEREAS, on December 2003, the National Assembly proclaimed April 6 as Tartan Day in recognition of the Scottish immigrants;

WHEREAS Quebec is the only province in Canada that has not officially adopted a tartan;

We, the undersigned, request that the Government of Quebec adopt Plaid du Quebec tartan number 1949 as the official tartan of the Province of Quebec.
