Petition text
WHEREAS board games, hobbies, and products related to cultural leisure activities are often produced in small quantities abroad and are not made available in French by their publishers;
WHEREAS the new requirements imposed by Charter of the French language regarding packaging and documentation in French render these products inaccessible to Quebec retailers and force consumers to turn to foreign platforms;
WHEREAS these restrictions harm local retailers, weaken the cultural leisure ecosystem in Quebec, and limit consumer choices without a real impact on the vitality of the French language;
WHEREAS these products are more akin to cultural and leisure goods than standard consumer goods, similar to books, which are already exempt from these obligations;
We, the undersigned, call on the Government of Quebec to amend the Charter of the French language and its application regulations to explicitly exclude board games, hobbies, recreational products, and creative accessories from the linguistic requirements regarding packaging and documentation when such products are produced outside Quebec, in limited runs, and not translated.
