Petition text
WHEREAS thousands of children use school buses every day to travel to and from school and should be able to do so safely;
WHEREAS on January 12, 2026, a school bus overturned after sliding on an icy road, injuring several students who were not wearing seat belts;
WHEREAS on March 7, 2026, another school bus overturned in Sainte-Rose-de-Watford, causing the death of a 13 year old cadet, who was ejected from the bus due to the absence of a seat belt;
WHEREAS bus drivers, motorists and passengers using various modes of public transport must wear a seat belt, while students in school buses do not benefit from the same protection;
WHEREAS installing seat belts is recognized as an effective measure to reduce serious injuries and deaths in road accidents;
We, the undersigned, ask the Government of Québec to adopt legislation making seat belts mandatory in all new and existing school buses and to require school transport companies to install them within a reasonable timeframe in order to ensure the safety of children in Quebec.
