Haitian Parliament

Image Haitian Parliament

A Brief History

In 1998, the Assemblée nationale du Québec and the Parliament of the Republic of Haiti signed an interparliamentary cooperation agreement (PDF, 834 KB) (in French) creating the Haiti-Québec Interparliamentary Standing Committee. The agreement was renewed on 6 September 2017 in Port-au-Prince.

The Haiti-Québec Interparliamentary Standing Committee brings Members of the Assemblée nationale and Haitian Parliament together, alternating between the city of Québec and Port-au-Prince.

The members of both parliaments discuss subjects of mutual interest such as tourism, the reinforcement of democratic institutions and hydroelectricity.

On August 27, 2026, the Lieutenant-Governor dissolved the Assemblée nationale. The call for an election ended the 43rd Legislature.

When a legislature is dissolved, MNAs, whose terms coincide with the duration of the legislature, cease to hold office. The President and Vice-presidents stay in office until they are replaced or reappointed by the new Assemblée.
