Legislative Assembly of Ontario

Image Legislative Assembly of Ontario

A brief history

The Assemblée nationale du Québec and the Legislative Assembly of Ontario signed an interparliamentary co-operation agreement in 1991, thus creating the Ontario-Québec Parliamentary Association (OQPA). The OQPA meets once a year, alternating between Ontario and Québec. It examines such issues as workforce mobility, farm insurance and financing programs, and relations with aboriginal peoples. The resulting resolutions are forwarded to the government bodies concerned.

On August 27, 2026, the Lieutenant-Governor dissolved the Assemblée nationale. The call for an election ended the 43rd Legislature.

When a legislature is dissolved, MNAs, whose terms coincide with the duration of the legislature, cease to hold office. The President and Vice-presidents stay in office until they are replaced or reappointed by the new Assemblée.
