On March 5, 2014, the Lieutenant-Governor dissolved the National Assembly. A general election will be held on Monday, April 7, 2014. The call for an election ended the 40th Legislature.
At the time of dissolution, the seats were divided as follows:
- Parti québécois (leader: Pauline Marois): 54 seats.
- Québec Liberal Party (leader: Philippe Couillard): 49 seats.
- Coalition avenir Québec (leader: François Legault): 18 seats.
- Québec solidaire: 2 seats.
- Others: 2 seats.
The National Assembly is composed of 125 Members, each of whom is elected in an electoral division under the first-past-the-post system.
After a general election, the Secretary General of the National Assembly receives the official list of candidates declared elected from the Chief Electoral Officer. The candidates then take the oath of office and become full-fledged Members of the National Assembly.
